Baby Earmuffs
Are earmuffs safe for babies?
Earmuffs are safe for babies, if the right style/model is used, and always under adult supervision. It’s important to use earmuffs that don’t put excessive force on the skull, and ensure there is an even spread of pressure when in use. Ems for Kids baby earmuffs use a headband to ensure pressure is not concentrated on the sides of the head. You can read more information on our FAQ page.
Do babies need earmuffs?
Babies are susceptible to hearing damage, just like children and adults. It’s important to ensure that, if a baby is in an environment where there is excessively loud noise, their hearing is protected. Our baby earmuffs ensure that a baby’s hearing is well protected, while still be comfortable to wear and easy to use.
When should babies wear ear protection?
Babies should wear hearing protection in any environment where there is loud noise, or noise that can cause hearing damage.
How do I protect my baby's ears when flying?
The noisiest part of plane travel is takeoff and landing, when noise levels can reach over 90 decibels inside the cabin, so it is important to protect your baby’s hearing at this time. During flights, there is still a lot of ambient noise inside the cabin as well – engine noise, cockpit announcements, service carts and more. While these levels aren’t damaging, they can still be unsettling for a baby that is trying to sleep. In this situation, Ems for Kids baby earmuffs can be used to settle your baby and help them sleep better.
How can I protect my baby's ears from loud music and noise?
The easiest way is to stay as far away as possible from the source of all noise. At a concert or live music event, staying away from the front of house speaker system, and instruments, is generally the best idea. However, all live music has the potential to cause hearing damage, especially indoors. For this reason, it is always a good idea to have baby hearing protection with you whenever attending any live music or other noisy events.
Do babies need ear protection for sporting events?
It depends on the sporting event. For motor sports such as Supercars or drag racing, the answer is a resounding YES! These events generate excessive levels of noise that can quickly cause hearing damage. For events held in stadiums (such as rugby league, AFL, soccer and others), the noise levels at these events aren’t known to produce consistently loud noise for long periods of time. While crowd noise CAN reach damaging levels (in excess of 100 decibels), most of the time noise at sporting events won’t be damaging. However, it can be very unsettling for a baby that is trying to sleep. Our baby earmuffs help reduce this noise to a much lower level.
What is a good noise reduction rating for babies?
As a rule, we recommend a “better safe than sorry” approach to hearing protection for babies. Where possible, we suggest finding a product like Ems for Kids earmuffs, which have the highest NRR on the market today. At the very latest, we would recommend a minimum NRR of 23dB.
Where can I buy baby ear protection?

How are baby earmuffs used?
Baby earmuffs are designed to protect a baby’s hearing from damaging noise that can have a long term effect on their hearing. The Ems for Kids baby earmuffs deliberately moves away from an over-the-head design, and instead uses a sweatband-type design to hold the earmuffs in place. This avoids concentrating pressure on each side of a baby’s head.

Are earmuffs better for kids than earplugs?
Most definitely. While kids earmuffs are larger than ear plugs, they are easier to fit correctly. Ear plugs need to be inserted all the way into the ear canal, and this can be difficult to do with children, as it’s hard to see if they have been inserted properly. Earmuffs are much quicker and simpler to fit, as they can be placed over the head easily, and as long as the ear is completely covered, then you know they will be effective. In addition, ear plugs can present a choking hazard that doesn’t occur with kids earmuffs.
